Board of Directors
Michael S. Miller is the CEO Emeritus of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRC-NY), an organization he led for more than 36 years. He also consults to an array of other Jewish organizations.
JCRC-NY is the central coordinating body and unified voice for more than 50 major civic, communal, educational and religious organizations in the metropolitan area. Its five thematic pillars are Intergroup Relations (Center for Community Leadership), Public Policy, Jewish Security, Jewish Communal Affairs, and Israel and International Affairs. JCRC-NY’s special projects include Community Security Initiative (CSI), We Are All New York Fellowship, Interfaith United – NYC Coalition, Legal Assistance for Jewish Organizations, Jewish Heritage-NY, Celebrate Israel Parade, Faculty Engagement, and Israel Missions. Miller hosted JCRC-NY’S Community Relations Corner and Congressional Conversations webcasts.
Miller led over 100 missions to Israel for more than 1,500 key New York political, communal, faith and ethnic leaders and influencers. During his tenure, JCRC-NY has become widely recognized as the go-to strategic bridge builder in New York, as it strengthens relations internal to the Jewish community and with the broad array of local ethnic, racial and religious groups in the area. Indeed, JCRC-NY’s Center for Community Leadership has been hailed by the White House, Congress and City Hall for its trail-blazing programs focusing on community and coalition building, leadership training for diverse teens, young adults and adults, and crisis management. Furthermore, the professional and personal relationships he forged with major figures in the halls of government in New York and Washington, D.C., key opinion makers in Israel, law enforcement officials (NYPD and FBI), and multi-ethnic leaders in the metropolitan area, have engendered respect for JCRC-NY as an organization dedicated to outreach efforts while protecting and defending Jewish rights and interests.
Upon receiving his rabbinical ordination at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University, he began his career in Jewish communal service in 1976 as a U.S. Army Chaplain in Fort Knox, KY and was awarded the coveted Army Commendation Medal. He then accepted an appointment as spiritual leader of a congregation in Springfield, MA, where he played an active role in Jewish communal affairs. His training and experience served him well when, years later, he volunteered after the September 11th disaster and was certified as an American Red Cross Chaplain, working in the area of Ground Zero, and then in Queens in the aftermath of the American Airlines flight #587 crash.
Miller is an honors graduate of Yeshiva University, where he earned Bachelor’s and Master's Degrees in Jewish history. He has addressed audiences around the world on a range of local, national and international issues, and is the recipient of numerous awards. Among many public appearances, he was honored to deliver invocations at inaugurations of both the New York State Governor and New York City Mayor. Rabbi Miller is an active member of the Commission of Religious Leaders (CORL) in New York City, chaired by Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan.
A native New Yorker with residences in Manhattan and Efrat, Miller and his wife, Phyllis, are the parents of three children – Nehama (Kohn), Nitza (Jerome), [both of Efrat], and Yonatan, and 12 grandchildren. He is the son of the late Rabbi Israel Miller, Sr. Vice Pres. of Yeshiva University, past Chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Founding President of the American Zionist Federation, and President of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.
